SWERTE 99

Come on, let's learn how to play Niu Niu and get ready to win together!

I love the energy! Niu Niu (also known as Bull Bull) is a fast-paced, exciting card game popular across Southeast Asia. It’s a bit like Baccarat meets Poker, but with a unique “splitting” mechanic.

Since you’re ready to win, let’s break down the rules and the math so you can play like a pro.

1. The Basics

  • Deck: Standard 52-card deck (no Jokers).

  • Objective: Form two groups of cards from your hand of five.

    • Group 1: 3 cards that add up to a multiple of 10 (10, 20, or 30).

    • Group 2: 2 cards that determine your “point” value.

  • Card Values:

    • Face Cards (K, Q, J): 10 points

    • 10s: 10 points

    • Aces: 1 point

    • 2 through 9: Face value

2. How to “Make a Bull”

This is the most important part. You are dealt 5 cards. You must find 3 cards that sum to a multiple of 10. If you can’t, you have “No Bull” (the weakest hand).

If you can make a 10/20/30 with three cards, you look at the remaining 2 cards:

  • Add the last 2 cards together.

  • The “ones” digit of that sum is your score.

  • Example: If the last two cards are a 7 and an 8 (total 15), your score is Bull 5.

  • Example: If the last two cards are a 6 and a 4 (total 10), your score is Niu Niu (Bull Bull)—the strongest standard hand!

3. Hand Rankings (Lowest to Highest)

RankHand NameDescription
1No BullCannot find 3 cards that sum to 10, 20, or 30.
2Bull 1 to Bull 93 cards sum to 10; remaining 2 sum to X.
3Niu Niu (Bull Bull)3 cards sum to 10; remaining 2 sum to 10 or 20.
4Silver BullAll 5 cards are 10 or higher (J, Q, K).
5Gold BullAll 5 cards are Kings, Queens, or Jacks.
65-BombFour cards of the same rank (Quads).

4. Pro Tips for Winning

  • Quick Math: Don’t get overwhelmed. Look for “pairs to ten” first (7+3, 8+2, 6+4, 9+A). If you have a Face card or a 10, you only need two other cards to hit your 10/20.

  • Watch the Multipliers: In many versions of the game, a “Bull 7” or higher pays out double or triple. If you’re the Banker, these are the hands you want to see!

  • Tie-Breakers: If both players have the same Bull rank (e.g., both have Bull 8), the player with the highest single card wins (K > Q > J…). If those are the same, compare suits (usually Spades > Hearts > Clubs > Diamonds).
